Everything Must Go, directed by Jonah Carrel, is a postmodern dance company based in Greensboro, NC. Their choreographic work is rooted in absurd, provocative, and often physically demanding movement that engages with a wide array of topics; matters like historical events, the natural world, and various social and political issues all interpreted and contextualized through an abstract lens.
While Carrel may lead the process of choreography, the dancers actively contribute their voices in projects, creating a laboratory-esque space that promotes experimentation and collaboration. Ultimately, Everything Must Go, aims to share high-quality and accessible dance for a wide array of audiences looking to see things from a unique and strange perspective.
With bursts of cardio, "Pump" pushes dancers through an open and energized space. With "perfect" lines, "flawless" technique, and "ideal" imagery, the choreography investigates how Western concert dance has historically gone where no one asked them to go before; presenting concepts of optimal codified technique from "experts" in the field. "Pump", in its sarcasm, invites viewers to question what "good" dance is and consider how choreographers have historically presented their own work.
