Allison Beaty and Layla El-Khoury are collaborative dance artists who interweave scientific research and lived experience to create embodied, conceptually driven performance. Drawing from cognitive neuroscience, psychology, and other STEM fields, they translate scientific theory into movement, spatial design, and dynamic relationships between dancers and their environments, grounding complex ideas in personal narrative to make them accessible and deeply human. Their process is experimental and relational, rooted in improvisation, interdisciplinary dialogue, and close collaboration with each other and other artists across disciplines. Though each has been creating work independently for over a decade, this project marks Allison and Layla’s first collaboration, bringing together shared interests in science-based inquiry and complementary approaches to abstraction, narrative, and process-driven choreography. Together, they aim to invite audiences to encounter scientific concepts not through explanation, but through embodied experience.
This dance work invites audiences into an intimate, embodied journey of processing a traumatic memory and finding a path back to safety. Inspired by the principles of EMDR therapy, the performance traces the fractured relationship between mind and body in survival mode, moving through patterns of dissociation, repetition, and fragmentation before gradually rebuilding trust. Through shifting spatial relationships and evolving movement patterns, the dancers navigate what it means to listen to the body again. The work ultimately moves toward a state of integration and release, where memory softens its grip and mind and body reconnect with resilience and harmony.
