Protect the Web Showcase

Intersection Artist

Protect the Web is a project organized by Hector Vaca Cruz of Action NC.  The project brings together Charlotte area creatives to explore artistic and creative activism specifically in response to the attacks on our local and national immigrant and refugee communities.

The Artists:

Claudio Ortiz (percussion)

Claudio Ortiz is a Charlotte-based musician and percussionist whose work centers on rhythm as a tool for connection and collective expression. Born to a Puerto Rican mother and Venezuelan father, he blends Latin American traditions with contemporary, participatory performance. As a member of Bravo Pueblo, he brings ancestral sounds to life while championing Charlotte’s local music scene. His approach transforms everyday objects into instruments, making rhythm accessible and inviting audiences to actively engage.

Jessica Maria Canta (Vocals)

Jessica Maria Canta is a bilingual singer, songwriter, and community organizer blending soul, R&B, and movement music with her Mexican roots. Her work draws from everyday life—love, identity, and relationships with ourselves and others—grounded in stories of resilience and collective power.

Through Canta, she creates participatory performances where audiences are invited to sing, chant, and reconnect with their voice, transforming music into a shared, collective experience.

Jessica Moreno and Claudio Ortiz create an immersive, participatory performance that blends live music, poetry, and collective expression. Rooted in rhythm and voice, their work transforms everyday objects—like 5-gallon buckets and found materials—into instruments of connection, inviting audiences to move from spectators to participants.

Opening with a dynamic set of vocals and percussion, Jessica and Claudio set the tone before guiding the audience into a shared experience of drumming, chanting, and creative expression. With the inclusion of live poets and interactive moments, the performance becomes a space where people of all backgrounds can witness, learn, and contribute.

Jessica’s vocals weave through melody and chant, emphasizing that everyone has a voice—no experience required. Claudio’s percussion grounds the experience, making rhythm accessible and communal. Together, they create a low-pressure environment where participation feels natural and joyful.

This is more than a performance—it’s a collective practice. Through layered rhythms, spoken word, and shared sound, the audience is invited to discover the power of their own voice and the beauty of many voices coming together as one.
